RPGaDay2024 – Days 21, 22 & 23

Yeah, yeah. I did it again.

I know I missed a few days again. Work is mounting up and I had to get a new wi-fi extender because the previous one was cracked in the middle. Well, the new extender decided to destroy my home network so I have temporarily resurrected the previous one (through black technomancy, of course) until I figure out how to fix the new one or buy a new new one. Anyway, let me check out what I’ve missed.

Day 21 – Classic campaign

For 5th Edition, I really enjoyed running Out of the Abyss and Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. They are totally different campaigns and with their publication dates quite a few years apart. OotA was relatively early so it had its tricky moments GM-wise, but it was fun. WDH was more polished and the theme was very interesting. In both cases, I think I didn’t give the correct amount of time in a few things. It didn’t really affect the campaigns but maybe they could have been run a bit more smoothly.

Day 22 – Notable non-player character

I will disappoint because I will mention Therai again here (see day 14). Therai was a player character but they ended up a pretty good NPC when the player left.

Day 23 – Peerless player

I don’t want to mention anyone specific, so I’ll just say a few traits I like to see in players. I like it when they take notes, it shows me they are interested in what I’m trying to show them. I am grateful when they know the rules well enough to help new players at the table because I can’t juggle everything at the same time. I’m happy when they say what they want to do instead of saying what they want to roll for. And I’m excited when they give me feedback about the session, either good or bad. It shows me they are invested enough to give me feedback and it also allows me to get better.

And that’s all for today. I won’t promise again that I’ll be back tomorrow. With flooded basements that still need cleaning, wi-fi extenders thinking they are Terminators, pile of work reaching the height of Mount Doom, I just feel lucky enough to be able to answer them at least three at a time. But let me just mention that tomorrow’s question is “Acclaimed advice”.

And until next time, have fun!

P.S.: Speaking of Acclaimed advice, I just watched the video from Sly Flourish showing off their latest version of their GM kit and I remembered a few years back I tried to make a GM binder. I guess I have some digging to do.
