‘Unstuck’ Encounters by Jean Lorben is a 9-page supplement aimed at dungeon masters for when their players just can’t figure it out.
Disclaimer: We were provided with a free digital copy of ‘Unstuck’ Encounters.
This supplement is equipped with four short scenarios designed for the typical situation where you have to hand over information because your players are unsure of their next steps.
The Scenarios
Each scenario is divided into 5 parts:
- Summary: the general idea is introduced
- Utility: explains where the scenario is best-suited for
- Backstory: provides general background information
- Encounter areas: describes where the story takes place and
- Resolution: presents the outcome of the encounter and the clue is revealed
The scenarios emphasize role-playing and creative problem-solving, rather than combat, meaning they are flexible for adjustments, without worrying about the characters’ levels, so bonus points for that.
Let’s dive into the stories without giving away too much. The first scenario is called “Sticky chicken” and here the players must prepare a special meal for a kobold tribe to earn their trust and gain directions for a specific dungeon location. It is an interesting story that involves cooking and creativity with a dash of humor. In the second scenario named “A fine meal, indeed”, the players dine with a broke nobleman to extract valuable information. It tests both the patience and financial resources of the players, as they navigate through a full-course meal where they can choose between cheap and expensive options.
The third scenario, “Market rumble”, is a fast-passed chase where an information dealer is snatched by a bounty hunter, leading the PCs to rescue him to assist them in gathering information for an NPC. And last but not least, the fourth scenario, “Dirk’s Home for Wayward Rodents” where a clever rat negotiates a deal with the PCs in exchange for information about their quest.
Layout
The supplement uses visual cues to highlight key details and information for easier navigation such as bold text for Major NPCs or monsters the first time they appear, while mechanics like skill checks and saving throws are capitalized to stand out of the text. At the start of the supplement, there is a handy table with a summary of each scenario and what kind of aid it provides to the PCs, either finding information, a location, or an NPC.
Moreover, there are two types of text boxes, a grey one intended for the DM only, and a clear one that should be read aloud directly to the players for smoother storytelling. As for the art, there isn’t much of it, since it’s a 9-page supplement whose purpose is to get the players “unstuck” and I didn’t really miss it. However, the cover and the 3 pieces inside the document are beautiful black-and-white art.
Final Thoughts
Overall, ‘Unstuck’ Encounters create humorous opportunities for players to discover clues naturally within the game, allowing Dungeon Masters to guide their players without simply telling them what to do. The formatting elements of the supplement are designed to help DMs quickly navigate the supplement and make gameplay seamless.
