DMs Guild Review – B1 The Rogue Knight

Wednesday review just for you!

B1 The Rogue Knight is a supplement by Cawood Publishing set in the Forgotten Realms and aimed at characters of levels 1-3. Inside these 36 pages, you will find an adventure that fuses mystery and wilderness exploration, offering a mix of combat, investigation and roleplaying opportunities.

The story

The adventure typically begins with the party responding to a quest from a town called Daggerford, where they have to capture a rogue knight who has gone berserk. However, what initially appeared to be a straightforward task ends up with an unexpected twist, and the players find themselves fighting to reclaim the town. The setting is well-written and provides detailed descriptions of Daggerford and its surroundings to run the adventure smoothly. Although it’s set in the Forgotten Realms, I find the adventure adaptable to any campaign with minor adjustments. The adventure is also beginner-friendly in my opinion, making it a great choice for new Game Masters and players alike.

There are also premade characters available for you to use, enabling you to quickly step into the game. They feature only names, stats, and a short description to give you a glimpse of their personality, while leaving room for further development according to your preference.

Layout & Art

The adventure’s layout is clean, with practical maps that aid in visualizing the areas for both GMs and players. There are many handly tables for encounters and events, varying from minor obstacles to actual threats, that add a sandbox feel to the adventure. These tables make parts of the story unpredictable, allowing the GM to easily replay it with different groups and experience new challenges and surprises. It also includes helpful text boxes for the GM to read aloud to players, which can be a great tool for setting the scene. Moreover, the cover art really manages to capture the essence of the adventure perfectly and transfers you to its world before the story even begins.

Final Thoughts

Overall, B1 The Rogue Knight is a well-structured, engaging, low-level adventure that covers all three pillars of gameplay. I believe it is a good choice for GMs looking to introduce players to the Forgotten Realms or have fun with a one-shot adventure.
