Dude, where’s my mana: The Commander 32 Deck Challenge – My First Picks

Let’s get down to business.

Last time, I took a look at the Commander decks I currently own or used to own at some point, and they have now dissolved into my collection. It was interesting because I saw what colours I prefer and what colours I haven’t even tried. And I haven’t tried so many! That’s good since I’ll get to try them now!

Then a question came up in my mind. Which cards in my collection can be used as Commanders? So I did what any sane person would do. I went to the LGS, got a new binder, and started adding legendary creatures in it. Then I realised that a binder with 40 pages wouldn’t adequately fit all colour combinations, so, again, I did what any sane person would do. I went to the LGS and got another binder so that I could fit all colour combinations in a way that would satisfy my brain. The specific layout is not relevant at the moment. Plus, it will probably change because I am not sure I’ve found all my legendary creatures.

Exhibit A: My Commander binders

This allowed me to get the status of what I can work with before having to go buy more cards. I do have two rules for the binders for the time being. however. The first one is that these binders house only one copy of each legendary creature. So, if I have multiple copies of Borborygmos, Enraged, only one of those can be here. The second rule is that these binders house only rare and mythic legendary creatures. At some point, I may get another one for uncommon legendaries, but for now, they will have to wait.

And now that you have an idea of my setup, time to do what I promised at the start. Let’s fill in some of the blanks.

Behold! Version 0.1 of the Commander list.

As you can probably see, some of the selected Commanders have been marked with one or two asterisks. That’s because, while I own the deck and it’s fine to play, working on my Commander binder reminded me that I have a few legendaries I want to see leading a deck. And, thus, below is a list of my potential commanders.

Cool fox with cool mechanic

As a mono-white Commander, I am considering Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor for three reasons. One, it’s a fox. Two, I have this cool art version. And, three, I am interested in making an auras deck that’s not voltron.

Arcanis the one who got me into Magic

Arcanis the Omnipotent WILL be my mono-blue Commander. Arcanist’s Guile was the first deck (and cards) to ever touch. It was given to me at the LGS for starting to play Magic. Arcanis holds a special place in my heart for that reason, and I think I can make an interesting deck with this Commander.

Goblins!

Goblins are iconic in Magic. Goblins are iconic in general. I used to have a goblin deck in Modern. I wonder how goblins can work in Commander. Krenko, Mob Boss looks interesting, and I may be using it as a mono-red Commander.

Big dino wins

Ghalta, Primal Hunger feels like it will be a fun mono-green Commander. Not because it has crazy mechanics, but because it’s HUGE and can also “fight” the Commander tax. The fact that it’s a dinosaur also gives bonus points.

I own this cool-looking version of Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. This was what made me take a look at the card. Then I saw the mechanic, and I was intrigued. I think making this deck will be a fun challenge.

Golgari (BG) is going to be a challenge. We have three great options because of their type. A hungry kitty, a hungry hydra, and an evil squirrel. How can I pick one?

A big snake that makes more snakes. Then the big snake can eat the smaller ones and do stuff. Could it work?

Can I make a Commander deck with only CMC 2 cards? Should I make a Commander deck with only CMC 2 cards?

No mechanical reasons behind considering this card. It has nice art and it says I can use it as a Commander. That’s all

Just like Golgari (BG), Naya (RGW) has cute animal cards. While I have Dogmean as my Naya Commander, I can’t stop thinking of making decks for those three cute friends. I want a dog deck because I miss my dog. I want a dinosaur deck because dinosaurs. I want a rabbit deck because Bloomburrow is probably one of my favourite sets.

Omnath is so cool, we have a bunch of versions of it. And this one has four colours! And you know a Landfall ability is going to absolutely amazing if it takes up 6 lines on the card.

Shards of Alara is the block during which I started playing. Thus, I am biased towards its cards, story, and mechanics. So there is no better five colour Commander for me than Progenitus.

And these are the Commanders I am considering using. The reasons are a mix of mechanics and flavour. Also, these have been picked from the cards I currently own. Will I change my mind if I see another interesting card? Sure, for most of them. For practical reasons, I have made a list of my potential Commanders on Moxfield.

If you have any decks with the Commanders above let me know if they are fun. I don’t want to make anything too overpowered, I just want to have fun with my friends.

By next month I will probably have chosen some more potential commanders for other colours. And maybe I’ll talk about an Esper deck. But we shall see.

And until next time, have fun!
