DriveThruRPG Christmas in July – Let’s pick some good stuff

Let’s pick up some good stuff from this huge sale.

Like every year, DriveThruRPG runs its Christmas in July sale, with way too many titles on sale. So I’ll be making some suggestions based on what I already own and what I’m considering getting. By the way, you still have a day for one of the biggest RPG Humble Bundles.

Starter Sets

Free League has some really good starter sets. I have the Dragonbane starter set, and I’m really happy that it contains everything I need to run the game. I say that because sometimes starter sets are quick-start packets disguised as starter sets. And I can say Free League treats starter sets well. Now, I really want to take a good look at the Imperium Maledictum and Fallout starter sets. I am a fan of both the Warhammer 40K and Fallout universes, and it’d be cool to play in them at some point.

The Lazy Dungeon Master

It would be a mistake if I didn’t recommend the Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master by Mike Shea. He has done a great job with his book in streamlining prep. You can also see how it works in some of his podcast episodes, where he preps for a session.

Rapidfire

I am definitely running Death in Space this year. If you can recommend an adventure, let me know. I really like the flavour of the game, but I need to see a good adventure so I can grasp how it works exactly.

World Without Number is basically my worldbuilding book. I am using it for a worldbuilding exercise I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. I will let you know how things go at some point.

Knave 1st edition was fun. I haven’t tried the 2nd edition yet, though, so it’s on my to-read list.

DMs Guild

By the way, the sale is also running on the DMs Guild. We have reviewed so many things that you can just go pick anything from that list. But I’d like to give a mention to Call from the Deep, because it’s one of the most well-written campaigns out there, in my opinion. Then I want to give a mention to Jeff Stevens because everything he’s produced is excellent. His Savage Encounters series is a great tool for every GMs’ toolbox and the quality of his adventures is exceptional.

  1. Hi. I’ve run the Search and Salvage zine for Dead in Space in December and recommend it. It showcases the themes and mechanics of the game. Basically a dungeon scenario in a spaceship with lots of interesting choices for the players.
