Dude, where’s my mana: Edge of Eternities Pre-release

I came, I opened packs, I did not conquer.

Last Saturday, the LGS hosted the Edge of Eternities pre-release. This is the only set this year that piqued my interest to the point of wanting to attend an event and actually do it. That’s an important distinction because I was thinking of attending the Innistrad Remastered and Tarkir: Dragonstorm pre-releases, but I was not interested enough, and I just used work as an excuse for not going.

There weren’t too many attendees, so it was a 3-round event. This translates to three rounds with a duration of 45 minutes each, which is enough magic for one day for me. Plus, it was a really hot day and, while the venue was air-conditioned, it still felt uncomfortable at times.

The event started a bit late, because some people either cannot tell the time or do not care about the time of others. But it’s all good. We got the pre-release pack and got to opening our boosters.

I am somewhat happy with my pulls.

My card pool was fair. Straight away, I noticed red, green, blue, and black were quite good. However, I couldn’t go for a four colour deck on a pre-release, so I settled with a Jund one. In retrospect, I do believe my colour choice was correct, given the card pool. You can find the deck here. It’s nothing special but it was fun to play.

Here it is, in all its glory

Gene Polinator was an MVP, especially when I had non-creature, non-land permanents on my board, giving me extra mana for fixing. Sothera, the Supervoid, was instantly the main threat when it hit the board, no matter what else I had in my control. My removal was quite good as well. And I did get to use Tannuk, Steadfast Second, to warp in Susurian Dirgecraft. So most of my games were fun.

In the end, I finished at 0-2-1. I may not have gotten a round win, but I sure made my opponents work for theirs, so I do not regret it. My only regret is that I never got to cast Mutinous Massacre.

I wasn’t planning on making a full report, so this is where I am going to stop. It wouldn’t be interesting anyway since I am not that good. The point is that I attended with the purpose of having fun, and that’s what I did.

I gave a quick look at the schedule for the rest of the year, and all I see is Universes Beyond releases. I don’t know if I will attend any event for those, because I cannot justify their increased price. I don’t mind the UB sets in general, though. Anyway, I’ll be back later in the month with some thoughts on some new Commander decks I got.

And until next time, have fun!
