Patrons and prompts are good and all, but you need a place to find them.
Well, technically, they can find you in some cases. But it’s easier to find you in a tavern than anywhere else. Taverns are not just a place to eat and rest. Over the years, they have become a symbol. It’s a place where adventures begin. And no matter how classic or overused that may feel, it doesn’t negate the fact that they are a classic for a reason.
Because this is also a place where stories are told. Adventurers return and tell their tales of success or, in some cases, defeat. In some cases, adventurers not returning is a story on its own and, in many cases, a prompt. The Yawning Portal is legendary for a reason. Sure, being built on top of one of the handful of entrances to the Undermountain helps, but it’s the people and the tales that can be found there that make it what it is.
Personally, I really like the tavern. It’s true and tried, and has never disappointed me. And there are so many ways to make it different each time. So, don’t be afraid of using it. The players also get it and will play along. Of course, you can use many other things to start an adventure, but you can’t keep using a plummeting airship and expect the same thrill.
And that’s all for this prompt. I’ll be back later (yeah, I was a bit late on this one) for the next prompt, which is “message”.
And until next time, have fun!
