#RPGaDAY2025 – Day 19: Destiny

Playing with destiny is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

It has been used to tell stories for thousands of years, and with multiple variations. Some characters cannot escape destiny, no matter how hard they try. Others manage to break free, but at what cost? And that’s just a linear way to see it. And along with destiny come those who try to see through it.

One of the most well-known oracles in the world was Pythia, the oracle of Delphi. Pythia never gave straightforward prophecies. They could be interpreted in many ways, and that’s also why the oracle never lost face regarding them.

If you want to incorporate elements of destiny in your game, be like Pythia. Leave things as vague as you can get away with. But the reason is not to save face like Pythia, but to be able to shape this destiny you have introduced in the game based on what your players will say or do. It’s much more fun for me to make slight changes and twists based on what I hear my players talk about.

And that’s all about destiny I can tell you for now. Remember. Destiny is vague. Use that. Coming up next is the prompt “enter”.

And until next time, have fun!
