Plot twist!
Everyone likes a good plot twist. It’s nice, shocking, and fun.
However, not all plot twists are unexpected, and not all plot twists can be unique. In fact, plot twists can be used to train or scar your players…forever…
I ran a custom encounter one time for my players. Something that was meant to be short, just to connect their location with the location of an adventure I was planning to run that day. Well, it took them a bit over an hour and left them suspicious of anything vegetable.
The adventurers were travelling through a pumpkin field when they felt someone was watching them. They spread out to look for potential threats, but couldn’t find anything until something hit one of them. It was a pumpkin seed. And that’s when more things began to move. Seeds were flying all over the place, and some roots started grabbing the players. After getting a hold of the situation, the players realised they were up against some pretty mean pumpkin-like creatures. Some were small and bounced all around, shooting seeds at them, while others were a bit larger and used roots to try and grab them. This wouldn’t really be a threat, but the fact that they were in a field filled with pumpkins as far as the eye could see made things a bit more difficult. In total, more actual pumpkins were squished before all of the assailants were dealt with.
Since then, my players have never felt safe while travelling through fields of vegetables. Between you and me, this is for the better, as those two pumpkin monsters are not the only ones that lurk in those fields…
And that’s all I have to say about pumpkins, at least for now. Maybe in a month or so, I will have a couple more things to say. But let’s focus on the next prompt, which is “challenge”.
And until next time, have fun!
