#RPGaDAY2025 – Day 27: Tactic

I don’t like tactics.

I’m not a person who will use tactics when playing, be that tabletop RPGs, board games, or video games. The only slight exception is card games, and that’s because I consider tactics the part of creating a deck. While playing, I usually won’t go into laser focus mode and make the most out of the cards in my hand. It’s not what’s fun for me. It’s also somewhat restrictive.

That’s why I also prefer theatre of the mind when playing. Combat is cool, but if I wanted to reduce the game to a crawl, I would just play a miniature wargame, where tactics are the core of the game. It’s also easier to play and, in my opinion, allows more creativity. Does it require more narration from the GM in order to set the scene and surroundings? Sure, but that’s part of what we do anyway.

And that’s my small jab against tactics and relying on terrain to play. If you enjoy that, keep doing your thing. I’m not judging you…much. The next prompt is going to be “suspense”.

And until next time, have fun!

  1. I have tons of D&D minis but I hardly ever use them anymore. It is a struggle because I prefer not slowing things down with maps and minis, even virtually, but players can get frustrated with theater of the mind because they can’t visualize where everyone is

    • My players don’t really get frustrated with theatre of the mind because that’s what we’ve been doing almost from the start. So it’s more of a habit at this point. I use maps, when we are in a dungeon but mostly so they know their location. Our combat doesn’t really need a battle map.
