I don’t use experience points, but that’s not the main thing for today.
But yeah, I don’t like using experience. I prefer milestones. Killing a bunch of kobolds does not prepare one for a fight against a dragon. Anyway.
I asked Nicole for tips on getting the best experience during a session. She’s a more seasoned player than I, since I mostly GM, so she definitely notices things differently. She came back with these.
Bribe Pay tribute to the GM with food and coffee. A caffeinated GM is a happy GM.
Be on time. You’ll get the time to mentally prepare and also chat with your friends.
Be prepared. Make sure you have all your essentials with you. Dice, a pen, your notes, and your character sheet. Speaking of the character sheet.
Know your character. You don’t need to remember all your stats and spells, but you need to remember a couple of things. Being able to make an attack roll with your favourite weapon without having to look for the numbers on your sheet is nice. Knowing where everything is on the sheet is even nicer. Knowing what motivates your character is the best.
Don’t talk about random stuff during playtime. That’s why you should be on time, so you can chat about random stuff before the game. Or save them for after the game. Getting sidetracked like that makes everyone lose their focus, and it’s not fun.
And these are the main tips she gave me. To be fair, they don’t seem that bad, especially the coffee one. I do like my coffee. Tomorrow’s the last day of RPGaDay 2025, and we’re ending things with the prompt “reward”. See you all tomorrow.
And until next time, have fun!
P.S.: You can find all of my posts for this year’s RPGaDay here. Thanks to AUTOCRATIK and Casting Shadows for hosting another year of the event.
