DMs Guild Review: Cerberus’ Lair – Torkhund’s Forge

Do you need any repairs?

Cerberus’ Lair – Torkhund’s Forge by Revel Tales is a collection of 100 magic items and an electrum best seller, and I can definitely see why. It is not your typical list of magic items. At the very beginning, it introduces you to the Cerberus’ Lair: an emporium owned by Torkhund the blacksmith, which offers you a tome of items that can be ordered. So let’s dig in!

Content

Unlike the adventures we usually cover here, this is neither a dungeon crawl nor a mysterious disappearance. Cerberus’ Lair is a place that can be easily dropped into an ongoing campaign when your players are interacting with a shopkeeper for a memorable experience or even as a source of treasure. You are not simply browsing a catalogue, but instead are invited to an actual emporium. Although presented angry, Torkhund will craft whatever you pick from his tome by the next morning.
The items vary from weapons and rings to potions and brooches, and even tiaras, ensuring something for every class and playstyle. Classic items are spiced up with twists like Vigilant Armor: an armor that casts the shield spell as a reaction, or Scoundrel’s Phoney Glasses: that let you cast the disguise self spell- now you know how Clark Kent did it! Use a Nubiform Pipe to cast a fog cloud spell as a bonus action. Holy smokes indeed. As a barbarian, I can’t pass by the Tiara of Bones: a tiara that requires attunement by a barbarian to add a +2 bonus on any skill checks and also on Constitution saving throws.
Some items are trickier as they can be literally crumbled into ash if overused, like the Wand of Luminescence, which casts the faerie fire spell. Others have side effects like Tongue-twister Potion, where your failed saving throw makes you speak the truth for 10 minutes or Lucky Man’s Tunic, which may increase your treasure by 50% or just half it, pretty straightforward.

Layout & Art

The layout is well organised, and the menu of contents is hyperlinked, which I’m very fond of, especially in this type of supplement. The items are divided by type, and each one is written clearly.
As for the art, the cover is very intriguing and fitting to the theme of the supplement. Moreover, many of the items have an accompanying art piece that matches their description.

Final Thoughts

I find Cerberus’ Lair – Torkhund’s Forge a nice tool for every story. It definitely earns the #NicoleRecommends tag, and I’m looking forward to using it in our games. Would you add it to your campaign?
