Random Ramblings #2: Happy New Year Edition

Happy new year everyone!

How are you? I hope 2018 has been good to you so far. It’s been okay for me. I’ve been kinda busy with studying and that’s why I wasn’t that active. In fact, it’s going to be like that until early February. I’ve been overwhelmed with studying and can’t keep up with everything. I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Now that we’re done with the unpleasant stuff let’s move to the interesting stuff.

I set some goals, blog and hobby wise, at the beginning of 2017 and it’s time to see how I did. I don’t have a lot of time so let’s just jump into it.

Increase the quality and maybe the quantity of the content. The quantity of the posts has remained pretty much the same but I’ve been trying new things content wise. I still haven’t figured out a schedule that can suit me even when I’m extremely busy with university stuff, but I’m working on it. Numbers wise the blog has exceeded my expectations by a lot. And when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. And it’s all thanks to you. Thank you for reading the stuff that come out of my head. I appreciate it.

Maps! I actually made a few! I really like drawing maps and I’m slowly, and hopefully surely, getting better at it. For now, I have a kinda small range of things I can draw that I consider share worthy. I’ve been doing some studying on it and trying new things when I have time. Hopefully, I will be able to share new things with you this year.

Make the blog look better. I’m still trying things. I could really use some feedback on that. What do you think is missing? Is there anything that could make your life easier when browsing the blog?

Social media. I like using them. We are fortunate to have welcoming communities in all the big social media platforms. Twitter has a lot of amazing people who are always happy to talk about RPGs. Facebook is also full of groups and pages. And, of course, Instagram has a ton of people who want to show off their geek loot all the time. I’m having a great time checking out miniatures, dice, books and many more. Last but not least there’s Google Plus. Yes, it’s still alive and, actually, the RPG community is strong there. Feel free to hit me up in any of the platforms mentioned above. Links can be found at the top of the page.

Homebrew material. I’m really happy I made progress! I released a character option for the Rogue on the DMs Guild. It was a collaboration with a friend and player of mine and I had fun doing it. The character creation tables were moved on the DMs Guild, as well, and they’ve been getting a lot of downloads. I believe it was a wise decision to move them because people can find them more easily now.  Finally, I was asked by Jeff Stevens to submit an encounter for one of his Savage Encounters series. It was the Encounters in the Savage Cities and I got a lot of experience and insight by contributing to this project. And that was only the beginning. I’ve started working on a couple of projects and I have many more ideas that I haven’t started working on yet.

There was also some homebrew content on the blog. There’s not a lot but I created some Halloween themed monsters. I actually got to use them in the Halloween themed one shot I ran and they added a lot of chaos in the game. I marked it as a total success. There were also a couple of random tables. I’d love to make more if you’re interested, because I had fun creating them.

Play more. I did it! I actually did it. And not only did I get to play more, but I also got more players! Now the party has finally four people. The two new players are new to the hobby but they really enjoy it. We had a couple of one shots for them to see if the game suits them and then I introduced them to my current campaign, which is Out of the Abyss. We’re past the halfway mark but that didn’t seem to be a problem. I believe that’s because they bonded well with the more experienced players, which makes me really glad. I have amazing players.

Now you may ask what my goals for this year are. To be honest, they haven’t changed. I still want to work on the goals mentioned above. I’m happy with how I did the past year but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to do even better. As for new ones, I have a couple.

Read more. I really want to read more. During the holidays I finished an amazing book I had a started in early 2017. I will talk about it soon. My book backlog keeps getting bigger because I find more books I want to read. It’s time to try making it a bit smaller so I can have an excuse to buy more books.

Miniatures. I want to paint miniatures. I got to paint a Warhammer 40k miniature and I really liked it. I have a box of unassembled and unpainted ones which I didn’t have the time to play with. Hopefully, this year I’ll get to paint a few. They aren’t Games Workshop miniatures but they are from another game of the same type. Let me know if you’re interested in learning more about them.

Try a new system. I have a few in mind but I haven’t decided which one I’ll try next. I’d love some suggestions.

And that’s all for now. There aren’t many new goals because I really want to work on the existing ones, but I’m sure I’ll come up with a few more at some point. I’d love to hear about your goals. Do you have a new system or a board game you want to try?

As I mentioned earlier, I won’t be very active until early February. I’ll try posting when I get some free time but it’s not something I can promise, mostly because the free time will be limited and I’ll be using it to relax a bit. I’ll probably be around on social media if you want to get in touch. Happy new year.

And until next time, have fun!
