Happy review Wednesday!
The adventurous Psion is a 5e supplement presenting the Psion class by Midnight Moth Publications. Other work includes The Greenling Player’s Guide & Paladin: Oath of the Elder Wolf, The Adventurous Vampire and two Warlock subclasses: Dragon Patron & Ooze Patron, which we have previously reviewed, and I’m linking for your convenience.
Disclaimer: We were provided with a free digital copy of this product.
The supplement presents a full 20-level Psion class, along with 2 subclasses focusing on different aspects of willpower. It isn’t a wizard, but a new class with its own identity that doesn’t focus on brute strength. How does one become a Psion? Well, there are 4 origins to choose from, which, apart from the background, also give you different benefits and shape characters from the very beginning. To give you a brief view, characters can be trained by a Psion order, simply born with raw talent, exposed to strange forces, or awakened through traumatic events.

The general idea is that psionics are masters of their mind, with abilities that blur the line between fantasy and reality. They manifest powers of movement control, emotion, perception, healing and even rebirth.
Telekinetic Psion
The first subclass allows you to manipulate the world and the battlefield according to your heart’s content. This means that you reshape space, gravity and movement with the power of your will. Lift objects and enemies in cinematic ways, freeze them in place, or master the skill of levitation and fall with elegance. Oh, and you can literally stop the flow of time with the Time Stop spell available at the 17th level. It is a subclass for players who enjoy controlling the shape of the encounters rather than simply dealing damage.
Telepathic Psion
The second subclass focuses on emotional control. Instead of controlling space, you control minds. Not only can you charm your enemies, but totally change their memories to dominate them. This means that you don’t overpower them directly, but rewrite the rules and alter their choices according to your preference. I can see this becoming a favourite of players who enjoy negotiation and social encounters in their adventures.
Going Nova
Psions can sacrifice their own life force to gain access to greater power. Going Nova is a nice mechanic that effectively captures the risks of becoming overpowered, followed by Burning Out, which varies from “You laugh uncontrollably, and acquire the
Incapacitated condition for 4d12 hours“, to the you drop dead effect. It could be used to add extra tension to a dramatic moment, expanding from resource management to meaningful choices. One does not simply go Nova!
Layout & Art
The supplement is presented in a two-column layout, with sections carefully separated in a logical order and information easy to locate. The class progression feels natural, with enough notes and handy tables for spells. Moreover, the illustrations are crafted by the creator and are truly unique.
Extras
As for the extras, in Appendix A, you will find 7 more feats tailored specifically for the Psion class, while in Appendix B, there are 10 new magic items. Appendix C explains the Nova and Burning Out effects, accompanied by a D-20 roll table. Lastly, character sheets with both subclasses are in the final pages.
Final thoughts
Overall, The adventurous Psion is a well-made supplement. It offers a class with flavour, supported by distinct subclasses that enhance it thematically and is a strong addiction for tables that prefer mind-bending adventures. In what depths would you go to gain extra power?
