DM Tip: Be ready to take notes anywhere and anytime

You never know when inspiration will hit you on the head. Usually, great ideas come when I’m least expecting them. And, because of that, I have lost many of them. So I’ve decided to keep a small notebook with me (almost) all the time.

I chose to use a notebook and not my phone as the main means of taking notes, because I like notebooks, I like writing with a pencil and because I can also doodle stuff if the need arises. Of course, there are many other ways to keep notes. I will use my phone to note something down if I happen to not have my notebook with me, but that’s rare.

But I don’t want to talk about how or where you should take notes. The important part is that you should be ready to take notes. Since I started carrying my little notebook with me, I have made three maps, written parts of my homebrew world’s story and created a couple of traps, weapons,  NPCs and plot hooks. Most of those would have been lost in the mists of oblivion. But now I have then in stored in a place safer than my brain and I can use them whenever I want.

This can also double as a source of inspiration. I usually forget what I have written in my notebook and, when I look through it, new ideas may arise from what I read.

I go almost nowhere without my notebook. And this habit has turned to be quite useful. Do you have the need of taking note of ideas that randomly pop up in you head? And if yes, what do you use to do it?

Until next time, have fun!
