#RPGaDay2023 – Day 3: First RPG BOUGHT (this year)

Let’s talk about acquisitions.

I love books. I really love books. I have a wall-high bookcase in my office and another one somewhere else in the house. And that’s not counting the boxes of books lying in other storage areas. So starting a hobby that fuels my book addiction was something good and bad at the same time. I tend to buy way more RPGs than I am planning to play but I am not the exception to the rule in our hobby. And that doesn’t even take into consideration my DriveThruRPG library. But let’s get into the actual question. Following the spirit of the previous days, I will try to answer more than one question today.

First RPG bought ever

I think I kinda answered that question yesterday by mentioning the D&D 3rd Edition starter box. However, I don’t consider starting with 3rd Edition because I bought and used that product basically by accident. In my book (heh), I count starting with 4th Edition and, therefore, that’s the first RPG I bought. Specifically, I got the Player’s Handbook 1 (because there were 3 if I remember correctly). By the way, I cannot decide if I prefer that style of book like Player’s Handbook 1,2,3 or the new style that has a playful name and a mix of content. Both seem fine. Anyway, let me continue with my answer. My brain has a problem with this acquisition because I got the opportunity to get the Monster Manual 1 and the Dungeon Master’s Guide 1 in their deluxe editions but not the Player’s Handbook. And this is something that annoys me even to this day, almost 10 years later. Still, I really like this book a lot. Now, let’s continue with the second answer.

First RPG bought this year

This year I have been really passive with my acquisitions due to work. I have talked with the owner of the local game store, who is also a good friend, and I have let him know that I will complete my 5e collection so he should make sure to reserve a copy of each official book for me. After that, I do not know what I am going to do with WotC. So the first RPG I bought this year is probably D&D 5th Edition. I don’t remember if I got any other RPG this year and my visit to the dungeon didn’t reveal any hints. I remember getting Vaesen but I checked and it seems I got it around the October of 2022. I did get a bunch of PDFs through Humble Bundle but I don’t really count those.

Now that I have been talking about books I remembered that there is a sale going on in a store so I will be leaving you now to check out what RPG book I can get. Tomorrow is “Most RECENT game bought”. It seems I will have to visit the dungeon again for this one, in an attempt to figure out what I have actually bought.

And until next time, have fun!
