#RPGaDAY2025 – Day 9: Inspire

Do you wait for inspiration, or do you hunt it down with dogs, helicopters, and everything?

We’ve all done it. We’ve all sat in front of our keyboard, notebook, or any other preferred means of taking notes, and waited for inspiration, usually to no avail.

For me, usually this approach ends up with losing my attention and doing something else. It really doesn’t work for me, especially since I have very limited time these days. My best approach so far is when I manage to go into the mentality of “I don’t care about inspiration. This thing needs to be written, and damn, this is what I am going to do”. To help with this, I try to remove some distractions and also isolate myself a bit. I switch from my desktop (with all the cool games and stuff in it) to my laptop and move myself to another room, or at least not to my desk. I do this because I use my desk for various things, and my mind goes there when I don’t want it to.

The last time I did this, I basically took a lawn chair and set it right outside my door. The results were excellent. I finished the writing of Underflow in less than two hours, parts of which had been haunting me for weeks. So, this is probably the best approach for me. The only obstacle is finding the time slot to actually do this, which has been a challenge for everything these days. It kinda makes you wish inspiration came as easily as in D&D.

And that’s all for inspiration. The key is to pay no attention to it and just do your thing. Do you have any special approach similar to mine? I’d love to get some more ideas. Coming up next is the prompt “origin”.

And until next time, have fun!

P.S.: You can find all of my posts for this year’s RPGaDay here. Thanks to AUTOCRATIK and Casting Shadows for hosting another year of the event.
