We do love good books, here at The Kind GM!
The Game Master’s Book of Magic and Mayhem for Kids is a toolkit for players aged 10-14 and part of the well-known Game Master series. Inside these 200+ pages, you will find rich lore, NPCs, monsters, locations, traps and random tables to help you craft your own tales, limited only by your imagination.
When the book finally arrived, I couldn’t contain my excitement, both as a book lover and a sandbox enthusiast, especially when people put in that extra effort for kids. So without further ado, let’s get to the review!

Content
This book is not just another adventure, but a wide range of tools to inspire storytelling and worldbuilding for young game masters. On the very first pages of it, you are greeted by an introduction that explains its purpose. The way it is presented is through an overview of what the book is and what it is not, adding another nice touch that takes into consideration how kids think. And even if you couldn’t plan a session for whatever reason (that we will definitely not judge, truly), the book offers an action-packed one-shot adventure involving pirates and treasures. The adventure isn’t restricting in any way and involves reaching out to the players during the setup. Feel free to choose your elements, mix them together and craft your own unforgettable story. Does Jolly Dodger ring a bell?
A strong point is that the content is written with younger audiences in mind, and is approachable as long as you know the basics of playing and running a session. Your table suddenly took an unexpected turn? No matter how much of a master planner a GM is, the chances are high that the players will surprise you. A GM cannot always guess what the party will do or improvise on the spot without some aid. The Random Tables section is not just a list of one-line prompts depending on dice results, but actually provides plentiful information to build something meaningful.
I totally enjoyed the trap section. Twenty-four traps await you to… well, (clears throat) step on them or explore them. Each of them comes with a matching name to reflect their result. I’ll highlight The Wrong Lever, where you pulled the wrong lever (as a fan of The Emperor’s New Groove, it instantly reminded me of that), and Slippery Stairs, which brought back childhood memories of turning staircases into accidental adventures, because as a kid, I often used to journey down the stairs.
Layout & Art
As for the book itself, it comes in softcover and is fully illustrated, with charming artwork that truly enhances the reading and playing experience. The visuals are effectively placed to help younger audiences bring to life what they read about, without overwhelming the content.
The layout follows a clear, two-column structure, with a table of contents at the beginning, and even before each chapter of the book, which makes it easy to navigate, especially for children. For example, you can quickly locate the Monsters section, and once there, you will find a sub table of contents for said monsters, followed by the actual monsters with art, lore and statblocks.
Different colours are used for each section, so bonus points for colour coding, which, although it appears small, is an effective design choice, as kids are the protagonists. Visual highlights such as bold text, dividers and text boxes with tips and notes for guidance are present, adding to the user-friendly.
When flipping through the pages, you will come across a variety of beautiful maps created by the award-winning Czepeku. Even better, there is an option to download them by scanning a QR code on the last pages of the book, a nice addition for those who prefer visual aids at their table.
