#RPGaDAY2026 – Day 16: Composure

I’m preparing to leave on a trip, so I must be quick for this one.

I’m leaving on a trip tomorrow, so I am in the middle of trying to pack some things. I will have to answer fast, but as a bonus, I will give two answers. Let’s go.

The first one will be the alternative question. “One thing that will cause a character to lose their composure?”

The wizard I’ve been mentioning through these posts will absolutely lose his cool and any sense of composure the moment he is told they can get any information regarding his great-grandmother’s whereabouts. She’s the one who initiated him into magic by being his first teacher, but she left during a great war and never returned. He believes there is no way she died, but something happened that doesn’t allow her to return to her family. The moment he figures there is a hint about her status, he will probably drop everything and try to follow that lead.

Now for the second answer, and my personal favourite. Composure is one of the greatest traits a GM can have. No matter how things go in a session, with the players blowing every single plan prepared for the day to smithereens, staying calm is the key. This way you establish to your players that you have total control of the situation and you were expecting them to throw every plot hook to the trash. So stay calm, and use random tables.

And that’s all for today. Tomorrow I will continue writing this, but I will be writing from a different location. It won’t make much difference to you, though. Tomorrow’s prompt is Intensity.

And until next time, have fun!
