D&D 30 Day Challenge: Day 2 – Favorite playable race

This is the article that I somehow managed to permanently delete. The original publication date is the 9/2/2016 . I have not idea how I did it and even if I knew, I would never let such dangerous knowledge be known. Lesson learned. Now I backup my articles before I publish them. Anyway, I tried to rewrite the article the way it was before but some variations are likely. Enjoy.

On the second day of the D&D 30 Day Challenge I will be talking about my favorite race. But I’m going to cheat a little. The challenge asks you about your favorite race but I’m going to pick two. Let me explain. The races I will pick come from the 5th Edition of D&D. The first class will be from the official 5th Edition publications. This means all the books plus the Elemental Evil Player’s Companion. The second one will be picked from the Unearthed Arcana articles that have been published until now. Let’s begin!

My favorite race from the official publications is the Human. It may seem strange but I’ll tell you why. I don’t believe the Humans of D&D are like us humans. They have managed to survive in worlds that other sentient species, that could be considered superior, live. They have even managed to create noteable civilizations or even be the major race in the world. An argument could be that magic can be considered a huge help but it isn’t always widely available and I still believe we would not survive. The reason the Humans of D&D have managed that is because of their (greater than ours) versatility and adaptability. And that also can be seen in their mechanics.

The Human variant is very good. If a DM allowed it I don’t see a reason why not to pick it. It grants a lot of stuff but the most important is the feat. Feats in 5th Edition are powerful and can’t be picked as often as in 4th Edition (I use the 4th Edition because it’s the only edition I’ve played besides the 5th). So getting a feat at first level may save you from a situation that could otherwise lead to your character’s death.

But let me move on to the next race. The race that I pick, hands down, from the Unearthed Arcana articles is the Warforged. I love Eberron and the Warforged. I really like their flavor and they, and the setting they’re in, have been a great source of inspiration for my own homebrew.

Their mechanics are quite good too. Especially that +1 to AC is really nice. A Warforged Fighter with the Defense Fighting Style, chain mail and a shield can have an AC of 20 at level 1. That is very high for the 5th Edition.

And these are my favorite two races. Tomorrow I’ll be back with my favorite playable class.

So until then, have fun!
