Questions like this one make me wish I had tried more RPGs in 2016.
Before I proceed to answering today’s question I’d like to note that a group of players who know a system can probably play a 2 hour session with it. With that out of the way, time to move to the answer.
To be honest, I don’t have experience with many RPG systems. However, the two I have an okay amount of experience with can be used for a 2 hour session, in my opinion. The ones I’m talking about are D&D 5th Edition and Open Legend RPG.
D&D 5th Edition is easy to learn and an good DM could have a game for new player up and running in no time. If the players don’t mind using pre-generated characters then things can be much simpler.
In my experience, when I introduce new players to the system, a lot of time is spent on character creation. At least that happens with me because I want the players to browse the Player’s Handbook at their leisure and create a character on the spot. If I had ready characters for them, instead, then I could definitely run a 2 hour game.
Open Legend RPG is a really straightforward system. The fact that it has a lot of stats may overwhelm someone who takes a look at them for the first time, but things are much simpler than they look. Also, the boons and banes system, which is pretty much the “magic system”, is very easy to understand and use.
In the end, however, I believe it comes down to the GM and how well they can use the system. In my case, even if I believe Open Legend is a bit more straightforward than D&D 5e, I would end up using D&D 5e because, at the moment, I can run a better game using that system.
And that’s my answer for today’s question. I’d like to see what you think about this question as well. I’m interested to checking out systems that allow quick sessions.
Tomorrow’s question is “What is a good RPG to play for about 10 sessions?”
So until then, have fun!
