#RPGaDay 2017: Day 13 – Describe a game experience that changed how you play.

This is a tough one.

I had to think about this question for a bit. I believe a major change happened when I transitioned from the 4th to the 5th edition of D&D.

The change is that my group and I moved from playing using a battle map to an almost pure theater of the mind experience. This made me use more details when describing the areas the characters visited, in order to balance the lack of a battle mat. The first few sessions felt a bit weird and it was more difficult for me, and possibly for my players as well, but as we started getting used to it I felt that I liked.

At the end of the day, I think that was a good thing because it made me get better as a GM. Sometimes, we still use a mat but we don’t do it that often and also we don’t rely on it that much anymore.

And that’s my answer to today’s question. This is a tough question so I’m really interested in your answers.

Tomorrow’s question is “Which RPG do you prefer for open-ended campaign play?”.

So until then, have fun!
