This is a really fun and interesting question.

The reason I say this is because there are so many ways you can answer it. Tools can mean a lot of things, from skills and habits, to actual tools that help gaming.

However, I think the tool that has helped me a lot lately is my tablet. I can browse many documents very quickly and that is very useful to me because I usually need a few of them when I’m GMing. Even when I’m a player it’s helpful, because I still need to check the rulebook sometimes.

For example, there is no physical copy of the rules for Open Legend RPG yet and you have to go to the website to check out the rules. Thankfully, I own an alpha version of the PDF because I backed the Kickstarter and it’s a bit more easy to do so. This also reduces the weight I have to carry when I’m not hosting a game, which is very important. Carrying a ton of books isn’t that good for your back.

As I said above, I need to browse a few documents during a session. That’s because I tend to take a lot of notes on Google Docs. Don’t get me wrong, I like taking notes on paper but sometimes it’s a bit more practical to have some of them online.

My tablet also gives me access to a ton of other online tools. The greatest example is generators. These can range from name generators to encounter and map generators. These can be very helpful when your players do something unexpected and need to come up with something on the fly. Also, D&D Beyond can be used quite easily on a tablet.

And that’s my answer to today’s question. I wasn’t expecting this to be my answer but, as I was thinking about it, I realised how much my tablet has helped me. Do you have any tools that help you a lot with gaming?
