Map – The Daorm Caves

Today I’m back with another map.

This is a small cave complex called the Daorm Caves. They take their name from the nearby village of Daorm. The residents of Daorm avoid it because of the various creatures inhabiting them from time to time and also because they aren’t structurally sound. That’s unfortunate because they are more than big enough to fit all the villagers in case of an emergency. Also there are all sorts of rumors about them, one being that the place was once used by a cult. However, nobody knows if that’s accurate, since many of the rumors are just stories the parents have come up with over the years in order to prevent the children from going there.

There are a few interesting things about this place.

First of all, there is water underneath some of the caverns and that’s why in a couple of them the floor has caved in. In the cavern you will first meet, almost half of the floor is gone. The good about it is that it is now connected with another cavern through a small waterway. You could swim there but I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Though, the underground beach in the other cavern does look nice, if it weren’t for the monsters that have made it their home.

Another cavern whose floor has caved in is the one on the top right. This one has lost most of its floor, but there’s a tiny “island” in the middle of the water. Even if the water here is much deeper, it seems that just this part hasn’t entirely sunk.

Another place of interest is a cavern that isn’t accessible by any obvious means. There is a path that leads to it, but it’s really narrow and only very small characters could fit through it without having any issues. However, there’s a well hidden passage from another cavern next to it. These two caverns were probably connected in the past but a cave in separated them.

Moreover, while the Daorm Caverns have formed naturally over the ages, there is one cave hasn’t. The quality of the work is really low so it may not be easy to tell it’s artificial. There are four pillars keeping the ceiling from falling, if you can call them that since they are just areas that weren’t dug out. The only thing that is obviously artificial is an altar on the back of the cave. It has a much better quality than the rest of the cave. I doubt this cave is the work of Dwarves, unless something, or someone, made them leave it unfinished.

If you delve deep enough into the complex, you will find two paths leading downwards to other areas. Another way to go further down is to wait for a sinkhole to open. As I said, some areas aren’t really that structurally sound.

There’s also a version of the map with a grid. It’s the first time I tried adding a grid digitally so any feedback is more than welcome.

I hope you will find this map useful. Any feedback is helpful. I really enjoy drawing maps and if I can help someone else by doing so then I’ll be really happy.

And until next time, have fun!
