#RPGaDay 2016: Day 25 – What makes for a good character?

In your opinion, what do you need for a satisfying character?

Since I mostly DM, I would like to answer this question from the perspective of a Dungeon Master.

As a Dungeon Master, the answer is a good backstory. Dungeon Masters create worlds and, in them, stories. A good character backstory gives the DM more tools to work with the players and shape parts of the world according to them. We can create stories based on the characters’ goals, fears, secrets and relationships with NPCs.

And also that’s why I prefer homebrew adventures over premade ones. Yes, you can incorporate backstories in premade adventures but in homebrew ones you can shape the whole adventure based on the characters’ backstories.

Tomorrow’s question is: “What hobbies go well with RPGs?”.

I have been thinking about this all day on and off and having played in a few games where you start when the character opens his/her eyes in a darkend room with no idea of who they are, where they are or what has happened to them that I now feel that a good backstory is a nice addition but not as important as we all think. It makes the GMs life easier when you have a good workable back story but another common answer to this question is “Plays well with others.” and I think I am coming to value that a lot more than a good back story.

    • I completely agree with you. This would have been my answer if I had chosen to answer as a player but as a DM I chose the good backstory. Also, my players tend to create characters that don’t cause trouble for others so I guess that’s another reason.
